History

The Graduates School, the Catholic University of Korea was
established in April 1960, with the approval of the Ministry of
Education, and initially provided Master's degree courses in Medical
Science. With the introduction of Doctoral courses in 1961, the
Graduate School became fully acknowledged and, in 1967, 1970,
1989 and 1994, Master's degree courses in Nursing Science,
Occupational Health, Doctoral course in Nursing Science and in
Public Health were added, respectively.

In 2005 Joint Program in Bioethics & Theology Doctorate and Master's degree courses was established, and
Joint Program in Medical & Theology was abolished. In 2006 title of the Joint program in Medical & Theology
was changed to Joint Program in Bioethics & Theology, and Division of Medical Education was established.
In 2007 Master's degree course for Joint Program in Bioethics & Theology was abolished and Doctorate degree
course of the program was established.

In 1997, the Joint Program in medical and natural Sciences was established in Master's and Doctoral courses to
develop and convert limited medical science into a field of life science by incorporating the basic theories and
techniques of natural sciences.

In general, the Graduate School education consists of lectures, experimentation and case works. The primary
aim of the Graduate School is to nurture creative teachers and scholars with a comprehension of methodology,
an emphasis on medical ethics and Gospel principles, along with the fostering of a humanized approach to
leadership in the fields of medical, nursing and public health specialities. In order to achieve that objective, the
curriculum places special importance on the cultivation of competence and human development so that students
will understand the importance of using their God-given talents for the betterment of human life through the
laborious devotion to the disciplines of their own choice.

As of the end of August, 2022, the Graduate School has conferred the degree of Master's in Medical Science of 2,902 men and women, the degree of Master in Nursing Science on 524 women , the degree of Master's in Public Health on 137 men and women, the degree of Master's in Biomedicine & Health Science on 606 men and women, and the degree of Master in Bioethics on 20 men and women. In addition, the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Science has been conferred on 3,225 men and women, and the degree of Doctor in Nursing Science was conferred on 247 women, the degree of Doctor of Public Health was conferred on 174 men and women, the degree of Doctor of Biomedicine & Health Science was conferred on 355 men and women, the degree of Doctor of Bioethics was conferred on 12 men and women, the degree of Doctor of Interdisciplinary Health Science was conferred on 5 men and women. At present, 470 and 192 students are enrolled in the Doctorate and Master's degree courses, respectively.
