The Catholic Institute for Healthcare Management (CIHM) founded in 1994 with the name, Institute of Catholic Hospital Services, was established to study managerial problems of Catholic hospitals, to plan and implement management strategies, and to educate hospital personnel in today's turbulent environment of hospital management.

It commenced its activities with three divisions - research, education and pastoral care - and the Division of Pastoral Care was separated from the institute to found its own organization in 1998. The name change was made in 2004.

The founding mission statement of the institute is to bring effectiveness and efficiency to the management of Catholic hospitals in the light of the philosophy of the Catholic Medical Center.

The elements of the mission are to: conduct research on the role of Catholic hospitals with a view to operationalizing it, conduct research on hospital management with a view to improving it, and design and provide training programs on hospital management for the staff of Catholic hospitals.
The scope of the CIHM's activity includes research, education, and communications and publications: Research: managerial problem solving, long-term strategic management, managerial decision support, quality assurance and improvement, assessment of managerial effectiveness and efficiency, impact analysis and strategy development concerning government policies, and development of policy data and alternatives pertaining to government health care policies Education: programs for top executives, programs for high- and mid-level managers, seminars for research results, seminars in collaboration with national and international health care organizations Communications and Publications: development and dissemination of hospital management information, marketing support, and operation of a collaboration center
