The Basic Science Department was established by integrating the three separate Departments of Physiology, Chemistry, and Biology, following the opening of the Songsin Medical School and the foundation of a two-year premedical course.
[Physiology]
The department will open a General Physiology class and Practice class for the freshmen on the premedical course. Our main research activities are focused on the realization of an artificial retina through an investigation of the electrical characteristics of the nerve cells in the retina and its mechanism of light-signal transfer.
[Chemistry]
The department is opening General Chemistry classes for freshmen on the premedical course and the College of Nursing, and classes in Organic Chemistry and Biophysical Chemistry for second-year students on the premedical course to further their understanding of life by applying the basic knowledge and principles of chemistry. Our main research interests include the mechanism of anti-cancer agents acting on the cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation processes.
[Cellular Medicinal Biology]
The department aims to provide fundamental knowledge of natural science and medicinal science to help the students who want to be health care providers learning professional knowledge of medicinal science later. We are opening General Biology and Genetic Engineering courses for freshmen on the premedical course and College of Nursing, Genetics, Cell Biology, and Animal Development for second-year students on the premedical course. Our major research activities are focused on the signal transduction mechanism of the mammalian retina, the taste receptor distribution profile in taste cells, and adult stem cell science.
