We are securing our status as a national leader of the field of ophthalmology and evolving with the anticipation of the future. Originally opened in 1958, we went on to establish ophthalmology departments in 8 affiliated hospitals between 1966 and 1988. We opened a lecture in 1958, which led to current lecture assigned for 1 credit in the first semester of 3rd year of medical school in order to teach the basic ophthalmic knowledge including structure and function of the eyes, genetics, symptomatology, ophthalmic test and ametropia, which are designed to help medical students to diagnose and treat various ophthalmic diseases based on the basic knowledge.
We have been playing a pioneering role in the field, publishing hundreds clinical papers on cataracts, keratoplasty, myoporthosis, glaucoma and so forth, and especially those on keratoplasty and intraocular lens implantation are in their superiority. We have done the most cases of the keratoplasty in the whole nation, and laid groundwork for conventional cataract surgery performed in Korea by development and implanting surgery of posterior chamber lens.
