General Regulations on Contribution of Degree Theses

 

1. These regulations shall apply to Songeui Campus students of the Graduate School of the Catholic University of Korea.

2. Degree theses shall contain new advances which make a substantial contribution to the progress of medical science.

3. Theses may be written in Korean or English. The default font for Korean theses shall be 바탕체. The default font for English theses shall be Times New Roman. Font size shall be 11pt, and thesis papers shall be double-spaced.

4. Details related to the preparation of theses shall follow the “Degree Thesis Submission Format” for the Graduate School of the Catholic University of Korea (Songeui Campus).

5. For Korean terms used in the preparation of theses, the following rules shall be observed.

  A. For medical terms, the Medical Terms Glossary issued by the Korean Medical Association or

       the Standard   Glossary of Nursing Terms issued by the Korean Society of Nursing Science

       shall be used.

  B. Medical terms, proper nouns, names, place names, drug names and units for which there is no

      suitable translation may be indicated in English.

  C. If the translation of a term does not sufficiently convey the term’s meaning, the translation

      shall be followed by the term in the original language in parentheses. Only the translation shall

      be used thereafter.

6. If the use of abbreviations is necessary, the first use of the term in the thesis body shall be followed

    by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter, the abbreviation shall be used exclusively.

    Notwithstanding the foregoing, the title and abstract shall include no abbreviations.

7. The composition of a thesis shall be as follows. Each item shall start on a new page.

  C. The supplementary information sections of both Korean and English theses may include raw

       data used in statistics, or data not mentioned in the results.

8. Theses shall be submitted online.

   A. Degree theses shall be submitted online using the graduate school portal system

       (http://portal.catholic.ac.kr/wps/portal). The name of the file shall include the degree and the

        name of the candidate, as shown in the examples below. e.g.) Doctor of Medicine_John

       Doe.pdf, Doctor of Philosophy_Jane Doe.doc

  B. The main body of the thesis shall be written using Hangul (.hwp) or MS Word (.doc).

  C. Figures or tables shall not be submitted as separate files, but shall be inserted into the applicable

      parts of the  main body.

 

Detailed Regulations on Contribution of Degree Theses

 

Theses shall be prepared according to the following regulations.

 

1. Title

    The title shall be stated concisely, and shall contain characteristic and unique information to

    facilitate searches for the thesis and determination of its contents.

 

2. Acknowledgments

    If the submitter wishes to acknowledge the contribution of certain persons in the preparation

    of the degree thesis, the submitter may include the names of such persons in the

    acknowledgments page.

 

3. Abstract and key words

  (1) The abstract shall not be divided into sub-sections, and shall be a single paragraph.

       The abstract shall include a short statement of the background, purpose and methods of

       the study, new and important results, and analyses thereof. While there is no limit on

       the length of an abstract, the abstract shall be as concise as possible.

 

  (2) Key words: 3 to 5 key words representing the contents of the thesis shall be listed

       beneath the English and Korean abstracts. For key words, consult the terms in Medical

       Subject Headings (MeSH) of Index Medicus (PubMed, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed).

 

 e.g.) For an English thesis: Key Words: Stomach Neoplasms; Apoptosis; Tranion Factor

 

4. Text

  (1) Introduction

    (A) A logically structured statement of the content of the thesis, helping readers understand

          the contents.

    (B) The introduction shall be stated concisely, avoiding unnecessary and verbose citations 

          of literature.

    (C) The rationale of the study and the process by which hypotheses were established shall

          be stated logically.

 

  (2) Materials & Methods

    (A) Methods shall be stated in sufficient detail to allow a reader to repeat the experiment.

    (B) If test methods or statistical methods are cited, the literature shall be quoted.

    (C) If the study is a human clinical trial or deals with specimens obtained from the human body

          (tissue, blood, etc.), anonymity shall be maintained to prevent the exposure of patients’

          personal information. Written consent shall be obtained from subjects in accordance with the

          Declaration of Helsinki and the “Bioethics and Safety Act” entering into effect on 2005.1.1.

          Additionally, proof  of approval by the Institutional Review Board of the Catholic University

          of Korea’ shall be provided.

 

e.g.) Subjects were informed of the study design and purpose according to the Declaration of

        Helsinki. Written informed consent was obtained from all subjects, and the study was

        approved by the institutional review board at The Catholic University of Korea

        (IRB approval number; MC12EISIXXXX)

 

  (D) In principle, research tools used in degree theses shall be used with the prior approval

        of the developer of the tool.

  (E) For reference of the readers, the product names and manufacturers of equipment and

        reagents used in the study shall be stated. When a manufacturer is first stated in the thesis,

        the name of the company, and the city and country where the company is located shall be

        stated in parentheses; thereafter, only the name of the company shall be stated.

e.g.) Human glioma cells (U87MG) were cultured in DMEM (Thermo Fisher Scientific,

        Waltham, USA) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (Thermo Fisher Scientific)

        and 1% penicillin-streptomycin (Thermo Fisher Scientific) at 37℃ in a humidified incubator

        containing 5% CO2.

 

   (F) As for statistical methods, if uncommon methods have been used, or if conventional

         methods have been modified, the method shall be stated concisely, along with quotations

         from the literature. If a computer program has been used, the relevant details shall be stated.

 (3) Results

   (A) For biological measurements, statistical significance shall be tested.

   (B) If test results are presented in the form of tables or figures, the same data shall not

         be repeated as text, or in another table or figure.

   (C) Only the result shall be stated, in a concise manner. Analysis and discussion of the

          results shall be contained in the Discussion section.

 

  (4) Discussion

    (A) Novel and important results obtained through the study shall be emphasized. Through

          comparison with existing reports, the reliability and originality of the results shall

          be analyzed.

    (B) The significance of the results of the study with regard to proving the hypotheses

          presented by the researcher in the introduction shall be stated.

    (C) If the study has proven the hypotheses set forth by the researcher, the significance of such

          hypotheses shall be stated, together with suggestions based thereon.

    (D) Matters already stated in the Introduction or Results section shall not be repeated.

    (E) The problems and limitations of the research method identified in the course of the study

          shall be stated, in addition to matters which need to be addressed for future studies.

    (F) Results shall not be analyzed based on data which has not been proven.

    (G) If the results warrant the proposal of a new hypothesis, such new hypothesis shall

          be proposed; provided, however, that it is clearly stated that a new hypothesis is

          being proposed. Where necessary, recommendations may be stated.

    (H) The discussion section shall end with concluding remarks that cover the purpose,

           results and significance of the study.

5. References

  (1) Method for stating names of authors in the text

    (A) Korean theses

           Names of Korean authors shall be stated in Korean, while non-Korean authors shall be

           indicated by their last name only. The following formats shall be used.

     a. Single author: 이시우, Douglas

     b. Two authors: 박인선 and 지도식, Smith and John

     c. Three or more authors: 고수근 et al., Conrat et al.

    (B) English theses

          Non-Korean authors shall be indicated by their last name only. The following formats

          shall be used.

      a. Single author: Douglas

      b. Two authors: Smith and John

      c. Three or more authors: Conrat et al.

 

(2) Method for quoting literature in the text

  a. All listed literature shall be quoted in the text. When quoting literature in the text,

     the number of the literature shall be stated in square brackets at the end of the sentence.

  b. In Korean text, no theses shall be inserted between parentheses and the immediately

      preceding word. In an English theses, a space shall be inserted between an opening

      parenthesis and the word immediately preceding it.

  c. If there is more than one number provided between the square brackets to identify multiple

      references, no space shall be inserted between the numbers.

  d. If there are two or more references cited, the numbers shall be listed in ascending order;

      however, if there are three or more consecutive numbers for references, the number of the

      first reference and the last reference shall be stated, connected by a “-”.

 e.g.) ...Is a cause of recurrent unprovoked seizure[6,7].

      ⚬ ...intermediate stage between non-neoplastic regenerating nodules and overtly

            malignant HCC [6,7].

         ...oncogenes such as p53 and AXIN1 are involved in this process [2-5], but the frequency

            of these.........

      ⚬ ...commercialized and successfully utilized in research [9,13-16].

 

  (3) Stating references

    (A) Periodically published academic journals

   a. Numbers without parentheses shall be used for references, and shall be listed in the order

       cited in the text.

   b. Literature shall be stated in order of author, title, journal name, year published, volume,

       issue, and page number. The format stated below shall be used.

   c. If there are multiple authors, their names shall be separated by commas (,). If there are

      six or more authors, only 6 authors shall be stated. If there are more than 6 authors, the

       remaining authors shall be indicated with “et al.” in English theses.

   d. For literature published in Korean, the Korean first and last names of the author shall

 

  be stated. For literature published in English, the last name of the author shall be stated, followed

  by the initials of the middle name and given name.

   e. When stating the names of academic journals, the abbreviations used in Index Medicus

       shall be used. Abbreviations shall not be used for academic journals that are not listed

       in Index Medicus.

   f. Unpublished observations or personal communications, etc. shall not be stated in the

       References, and shall be cited in the text using parentheses.

   g. When citing an article whose publication has been approved but which has not yet been

       published, “In Press” shall be stated instead of the volume and issue information, if the

       article is in English; however, if the article can be searched online, Digital Object Identifier

       (DOI) information shall be stated, along with the text “Epub ahead of print”.

  h. For articles published online which have no volume and issue information, the Digital

      Object Identifier (DOI) shall be stated instead of the volume, issue and page number

      information.

 (B) Books and other materials

  a. When using a book as a reference, the author, title, edition, city publisher, publisher and year

       published shall be stated, in that order.

  b. When using a chapter within a book as a reference, the author and title of the chapter, editor of

      the book, title, edition, city publisher, publisher, year published and the page numbers of

      the chapter shall be stated, in that order.

  c. When using a patent as a reference, the assignee, title of the patent, date of registration

      and laid-open date shall be stated, in that order.

  d. When using a degree thesis as a reference, the author, title of the thesis, type of degree, city in

      which the dissertation collection was published, name of the graduate school, and

      year published shall be stated, in that order.

  e. When using a website as a reference, the author (omit if unavailable), title, website address,

      and year & month accessed shall be stated, in that order.

6. Tables

  (1) Tables shall be inserted at the applicable locations in the text.

  (2) For tables, font size shall be 9 pt, with 1.5x spacing.

  (3) Tables shall be numbered in the order in which they are cited in the text.

  (4) Titles of tables shall be stated above each table in bold font, and no periods (.)

       shall be added to the end of titles.

  (5) Tables shall be divided using three horizontal lines. No vertical lines shall be used.

  (6) Additional explanations of the content of each table may be given in footnotes below the table.

  (7) Abbreviations used in a table shall be explained in footnotes below the table.

  (8) Footnote symbols shall be lower case, superscript English letters.

  (9) If citation numbers need to be indicated in a table, the same format used to cite references

       in the text shall be used.

 

7. Figures

  (1) Figures shall be inserted at the applicable locations in the text.

  (2) Figures shall be numbered in the order cited in the text.

  (3) The text size for titles and explanations of figures shall be 9 pt, with 1.5x spacing.

  (4) The title of a figure shall be indicated in bold font below the table.

 

 e.g.) Fig. 3. Major hormonal changes in the mother during pregnancy.

 

  (5) Captions for figures shall be inserted in a new line below the title.

  (6) Captions for figures shall be concise and sufficiently detailed to allow the figure to be

       satisfactorily understood based on the figure and captions alone.

  (7) Figures and photos shall have a resolution of at least 600dpi. Graphs shall have a

       minimum resolution of 1200 dpi.

  (8) Letters, numbers and symbols used in figures shall have uniform specifications throughout

       all figures in the thesis, and shall be sufficiently large and clear to be legible when printed.

  (9) Symbols, arrows or text, etc. used to aid the reader’s understanding of photos shall be suitably

       clear and large for ease of identification, and shall have a sufficient contrast from the

       background of the photo. Further, such symbols, arrows and numbers, etc. shall be

       explained in the captions.

  (10) The scale shall be marked on the photo in the case of microscope photos.

 

 e.g.) 50 μm

 

  (11) If a photo of a person is used, measures shall be taken to ensure such person 

         cannot be identified, or approval for the publication of such photo shall be obtained

         from the subject, and submitted  with the paper.

  (12) A figure cited in the text shall be indicated at Fig. 1, Fig. 2A, etc.

 e.g.) The function of hPL-L remains unclear (Fig. 2).

 

8. Proper nouns for organisms and genes

  (1) Scientific names of organisms

        Scientific names of organisms shall be indicated in italics.

 

 e.g.) human (Homo sapiens), mice(Mus musculus), rat (Rattus norvegicus)

 

  (2) Gene (gene, mRNA, cDNA) names

   (A) Full names shall be indicated in normal text.

 

 e.g.) insulin-like growth factor 1

 

   (B) Abbreviations (symbols) shall be indicated in italics. All letters shall be capitalized for

         human genes; for non-human genes, only the first letter shall be capitalized.

 e.g.) Human gene; IGF1, mouse gene; Igf1

 

 (3) Protein names

      Protein names indicated using abbreviations or symbols shall be capitalized.

 

 e.g.) IGF1 for both human and mouse

 

 (4) Proper nouns for genes and proteins of key species shall follow the nomenclature

      guidelines provided in the following website.

9. Units of Measurement

 (1) Values measured in experiments shall be indicated using SI (International system of Units)

       units.

 (2) For details on using SI units, refer to Guide to the Use of the International System of Units       

      (SI)http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/pdf/sp811.pdf.

 (3) With the exception of % signs and temperature units, a space shall be inserted between all

      units of measurement and the preceding numerical value.

II. Instructions for preparation of theses

 

 

1. Paper: 8-; B or greater white vellum paper or B5 copy paper

2. Print plate: 4 x 6 plate (18.5 cm x 25.5 cm), or B5 copy paper

    These specifications apply to hard cover volumes. Theses submitted for

    examination may be printed onto A4 paper.

3. The printed area shall be 14cm wide by 19cm high.

4. The default font for Korean theses shall be 바탕체. The default font for English theses

    shall be Times New Roman. Font size shall be 11pt, with double spacing.

5. Text shall be written horizontally.

6. Year, month and day of conferral of degree

    February (August for fall semester) ○○○○) - Indicate on cover page and inner sleeve

7. Year and month of submittal: State only the year and month when the thesis was submitted
